NATIONAL KIDNEY MONTH
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects about 37 million Americans and can lead to serious complications like high blood pressure, anemia, nerve damage, and kidney failure if untreated. To maintain kidney health, it's essential to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, staying hydrated, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol. Monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels is crucial, as high blood pressure and diabetes are the leading causes of CKD. Regular check-ups with your doctor can help detect any kidney issues early, improving outcomes. During National Kidney Month, we are also highlighting organ donation. Many people with kidney failure rely on dialysis or transplants, and there is a shortage of available organs. Consider registering as an organ donor to help save lives. Let's take this opportunity to prioritize kidney health by making simple lifestyle changes and being proactive about our overall health, not just this month, but every day.

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
Celebrate National Nutrition Month by simply remembering to "Eat the Rainbow" for a healthier diet!
March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to promote healthy eating habits. Focusing on making small changes in our daily diet for long-term health benefits.
One popular approach to achieving a balanced and nutritious diet is through the concept of "Eating the Rainbow". The idea behind this concept is that different colors of fruits and vegetables represent different nutrients and antioxidants that are essential for maintaining good health. By consuming a variety of colorful produce, we can ensure that we are getting a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients necessary for optimal health.
Red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, watermelon, and strawberries are rich in lycopene, known for its potential
cancer-fighting properties. Orange and yellow produce like carrots, sweet potatoes, and oranges contain beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body to support healthy vision and skin.
Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli are packed with calcium, folate, and iron - essential nutrients for bone health and energy production. Blue and purple fruits such as blueberries, grapes, and eggplant contain anthocyanins that have anti-inflammatory effects on the body.
So how can you incorporate "Eating the Rainbow" into your daily diet? Here are a few tips:
Start your day with a fruit and vegetable smoothie. Mix different colored fruits like bananas, berries, and spinach for a nutrient-rich breakfast.
Add a variety of colorful veggies to your salads or stir-fries. Experiment with ingredients like bell peppers, carrots, red cabbage, and eggplant for a visually appealing and nutritious meal.
Swap out processed snacks for fresh produce. Instead of reaching for chips or cookies, choose crunchy vegetables like cucumbers, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes paired with hummus or guacamole for a satisfying snack.
Remember to also include whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals for a well-rounded diet. Moderation is key when it comes to nutrition, so don't be afraid to indulge in your favorite treats occasionally.
